RIGHT ON RED4
Where The Left Takes A Turn For The Worse

Everyone has weighed-in on the Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth. It's been all you could hear on the radio today (except for the passing of Rick James a few minutes ago, RIP). Anyway, here's my take on the vets controversy.

It's irrelevant. I don't care if he did or didn't torch a village, I don't care if he did or didn't shoot a guy in the back, I don't care if he got Purple Hearts for papercuts. Whatever happened back in Vietnam, for good or ill, is between John Kerry and his maker. We'll never know for sure anyway.

What is relevant is his behavior when he got back, in front of cameras, in front of the Congress. What is relevant is what he did during his twenty years in the Senate. What's relevant is what he has said during this campaign.

Those things are more than enough reason not to elect John Kerry. We don't need he-said-she-said from over three decades ago in order to defeat him. The public record will do just fine.

There's no need to go after him on his war record - the hero angle is a non-starter. It didn't work for Dole and it's not going to work for Kerry. It's irrelevant to his base, and to the undecided it's completely transparent.

There's something untoward about these kinds of scandals that doesn't sit well with the American people in general. Conservatives are the only ones who are going to get up-in-arms about it, but we're voting for Bush anyway, no matter what comes out about Kerry's service. The liberals are never going to believe it, and I think it turns off the undecided. In other words, conservatives focusing on this issue are just preaching to the choir.

So I say let's drop it. It could do us more harm than good. Let the vets tell their side, of course, and let the ads go out. But let's not make it a cornerstone of the campaign. We don't need it.
